NEW YORK (AP) - Real estate and media magnate Mortimer Zuckerman is pledging $200 million to endow a Columbia University research program to explore treatments and cures for brain diseases.

The Mind Brain Behavior Institute will be located within science facilities under construction at the university's main campus in Manhattan. It will fund interdisciplinary research in neurological and psychiatric disorders and behavioral sciences.

The goal is to help develop therapies for conditions ranging from schizophrenia to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, along with developmental disorders like autism and Asperger's.

The institute will add about 65 staffers in the next few years and will eventually support the work of about 1,000 scientists and staff members. Thomas Jessell and Nobel laureates Richard Axel and Eric Kandel are the co-founding directors.
