House to advance disaster aid bill

Obama requested $500M for FEMA

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top Republican leader has announced that the House will quickly advance President Barack Obama's request for emergency aid for victims of recent natural disasters like Hurricane Irene.

Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the president's request for immediate funds needed to avoid a cutoff of emergency help like food and shelter will be attached to must-do legislation for prevent a partial government shutdown when the budget year ends Sept. 30. The stopgap spending bill is likely to advance next week.

Obama on Friday asked for $500 million to make sure that the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster fund won't run out of cash before the end of the month. He also officially asked for $4.6 billion for the upcoming budget year that starts Oct. 1.
