SAN DIEGO (KXAN) - A 335-foot ship of 700 pure tons goes vertical to become a research vessel.
It’s RV FLIP, which stands for Floating Instrument Platform.
The research station is owned by the Office of Naval Research and operated by the Marine Physical Laboratory of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
It will study wave height, acoustic signals, water temperatures and other cool meteorological data.
However, because it has no engines or other means of propulsion, it has to be towed to open water. That’s where it will either drift freely or be anchored.
