BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A convicted sex offender who infected more than a dozen womenwith HIV is expected to face a judge Wednesday.
State Senator Cathy Young of Olean said, "Nushawn Williams hasproven he's a threat. He's just as dangerous now as the day hearrived in prison,"
Young wants to keep Nushawn Williams off the streets, eventhough he's completed his 12-year sentence. Authorities say, in thelate 90s, Williams knowingly infected at least a dozen women withHIV, the deadly virus that causes AIDS.
Some of those women were from Chatuqua County.
Young said, "Since he's been behind bars, he's thrown his urineand most shockingly, said he wanted to infect other people with theAIDS virus."
The state attorney general's office is pushing for Williams tobe kept in custody under the state's civil confinement law, whichwould force the 33-year-old to spend time in a psychiatricfacility.
Williams, who also goes by Shyteek Johnson, is expected toappear in State Supreme Court Wednesday as the civil confinementhearings get underway.
"You need to protect society from people like Nushawn Williamsand I'm hoping that the attorney general is successful in keepinghim confined under the civil confinement law we passed a coupleyears ago," said Young.
Even if he isn't confined to a mental institution officials saythis story should be a warning to victims of this type ofcrime.
