BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A post on the Facebook page of the Buffalo Professional Firefighters Union caught out attention.
Since July 1, the city has closed six engine or ladder companies for a shift because of sick calls. Monday night, Ladder 13 on Hertel Avenue was taken out of service.
This is all being done under the city's new contract with its firefighters union. It can shut down a company for a shift if at least five firefighters citywide have called in sick for that shift.
Closing an engine or ladder company does not mean the station has closed - only that particular truck is impacted. The contract allows the city to move crews from the closed engine or ladder company to other firehouses.
