BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A viewer tipped News 4 off to a deep hole in the bike path that could be very dangerous to riders.
The hole is just off the main part of a bike path near the waterfront in Buffalo. So who is responsible to fix it? There was some confusion, it seems, as to what agency is responsible for this area.
The huge hole along the Riverwalk Trail is creating a big fear for bikers.
Todd Manning said, "We started slowing down, going single file after this."
Manning and Cathy Duprow are from Plattsburgh and are biking through Buffalo. They say some parts of this trail are in pretty rough shape.
"You have to really be aware when you're biking from this point on. Yeah, so that was kind of scary, approaching it," Duprow said.
The hole is so big, you can see it using Google Earth. The image available is dated September 2011, so it's clear it's been there for some time.
The crater is about a foot deep and looks as if it's been getting worse over time. With no warning, no cones and no flags around the hole, bikers say it's a hazard that they can't spot until they're right on top of it.
That's exactly what happened to Ken Moses. He was worried others were in harm's way and sent News 4 a picture of the hole.
"We'll ride six or seven together, and the first guy has to call out what he sees, whether it's glass, which is often the case, or a big hole," Moses said.
The path stretches from the City of Buffalo through the City of Tonawanda. But the City of Buffalo is ultimately responsible for the maintenance of this area.
Just hours after News 4 exposed the issue, calling for action from the city, crews were on the trail, filling in this one gaping hole in addition to many smaller ones.
