BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - As the tireless search came to a halt at our studios, lawenforcers who've refused to rest since the massacre reactedstrongly to Riccardo McCray's surrender.
What happens now? That's the question many people are askingafter the prime person of interest in the City Grill massacreturned himself in here at Channel 4 on Wednesday. We spoke withpolice shortly after Riccardo McCray was taken into custody.
Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards said, "As far as taking himinto custody, it was developed in the very recent past thatRiccardo McCray was a key person of interest in the events of theCity Grill shooting, which led to eight people being shot, fourfatally."
Richards was here at Channel 4 when McCray turned himself in. Hesays police have been searching tirelessly for McCray.
"We've worked with every local and state and federal agency intrying to develop information. There've been all types ofinformation on his possible whereabouts as you can imagine. I knowthe media was looking for us to come up with a name earlier," saidRichards.
Police are asking us and other members of the media to refrainfrom using McCray's picture.
Richards explained, "It's very critical to the prosecution inthis case if his picture is in anyway published in printed or TVpress, members of the public may see that and say they recognizethat person and that taints the identification because we aresaying this is the individual."
Police say a few witnesses have come forward, but they believethere are a lot more.
"Still investigating, we're still looking for witnesses to comeforward and perhaps with information that this person is in custodyright now, maybe more people will come forward," said Richards.
Meanwhile, McCray is in police custody.
Richards said, "His attorney will represent him and if he sochooses allow him to be questioned, so that remains to beseen."
Police say there were as many as 150 witnesses on August 14thwhen eight people were shot, four killed.
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office says a tractor trailer crashed on Route 39, in the Town of Eagle.
A Good Samaritan died Wednesday while trying to assist the driver of a tractor trailer who got stuck in the snow.
There is another Lake Effect Snow Warning in effect for Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties from Thursday through early Friday.
