ELMA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A keen-eyed neighbor helped Erie County Sheriff's deputies track down a bold robber who broke into an Elma home in the middle of the day.
A coin collection worth more than $7,000 was taken from a 79-year-old man's home on North Davis Road in Elma on September 9th. While the robbery was in progress, the senior citizen's neighbor happened to see a strange car in the driveway and an unknown man walking around. The neighbor jotted down the license plate number and description of the vehicle and called 911.
Deputies arrived on scene and found the sliding glass door in the back of the house had been smash and determined the victim's safe with the coin collection and other valuables had been taken. Authorities used the license plate number obtained by the neighbor to track down 33-year-old Bryan Colon of Buffalo, but it took a few tries to bring him to justice.
The first time deputies arrived at Colon's Niagara Street apartment, they say he jumped out of a back window from the second floor and ran away. The second time, they were unable to locate him. On Wednesday, they tried again. Colon tried to reiterate his earlier success of jumping out the window, but this time, detectives were waiting for him.
Colon will be arraigned Thursday night in Town of Elma Court.
