DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) - A driver used a ploy to try and evade deputies with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, but it didn't work.
On Saturday around 1:40 a.m., deputies were following a Dodge Durango down Rt. 20 at the Fredonia village line when for no apparent reason, the driver suddenly accelerated to a high rate of speed and passed through a red light at Rt. 20 and Rt. 60.
Deputies caught up to the vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the driver refused and instead shut off the vehicle's headlights to try and evade authorities.
The pursuit continued through the Town of Dunkirk and into the City of Dunkirk, where the driver pulled into a driveway on King Street and was quickly taken into custody.
Deputies say David Anzalone was driving on a suspended license and had marijuana in his possession. The 29-year-old has been charged with third degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, third degree aggravated unlicensed operation, unlawful possession of marijuana and numerous traffic infractions.
He was taken to the Dunkirk City Jail pending arraignment.
