BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - An 8-week-old Buffalo baby is in critical condition Monday night and the infant's father is now charged with assault.
Mark Bridenbaker's Facebook page shows a smiling, seemingly loving 22 year-old father.
The baby's aunt described Bridenbaker as, "...decent. Until this."
Police say the man assaulted his youngest child, 8-week-old baby boy, Markus, at their home on Indian Church Road in South Buffalo.
The baby's aunt said Markus' mother returned home from work very late Sunday night. While at work the aunt says that Bridenbaker was alone with his child. She said, "No one knows [what he did]. He was alone with the baby."
Markus' aunt said she and baby's mother rushed him to the hospital. Mark, the baby's father, arrived a short time later. Police then charged him with abusing Markus.
Now the baby's aunt and mother are just hoping to see Markus pull though.
News 4's Lou Raguse asked the aunt how the mother was handling things. She replied, "Crying. Stressing. [How's the baby doing?] They are doing more tests. They don't know."
Police believe Bridenbaker shook Markus, causing brain injuries. And they say there were indications the child was previously physically injured.
The news was hard for neighbors to believe. "That's close to home. We have two 10-year-olds here. Know what I mean? Wow," said Mike Gulczynski.
Bridenbaker is held on $250,000 bail. His next court hearing is scheduled for Friday.
