BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A family returns to court in their crusade for justice afterAmanda Wienckowski was found dead in a Buffalo garbage tote.
Amanda Wienkowski's family believes they're a step closer tofinding out what happened to the 20-year-old.
On Tuesday, State Supreme Court Justice Gerald Whalen convincedBuffalo and Erie County attorneys to allow a Los Angeles forensicpathologist to examine Amanda's full remains. Dr. Silvia Comparinifound evidence Amanda Wienckowski's death was a homicide when sheperformed an autopsy several months ago in Los Angeles, but keybody parts had been removed. Here in Erie County, she'll have fullaccess to all of Amanda's remains.
Amanda's frozen body was found stuffed in a garbage tote inJanuary of 2009. The Erie County medical examiner listed the causeof death as an accidental drug overdose. But her family didn'tbelieve it.
Amanda's mom, Leslie Fink, said, "I'm very pleased. Amanda'sbirthday is June 2nd. The doctor will be here and I thank God.Thank God because there is somebody out on the street."
The family's attorney, Steven Cohen, said, "We are hopeful thatwe're gonna arrive at the truth. Some real progress was madetoday."
Dr. Comparini will conduct her second autopsy on June 2nd herein Buffalo. Cohen says he'll seek to have the city and county sharein the $8,200 cost. Another hearing before Judge Whalen is set forJune 9th. Cohen hopes Dr. Comparini has reached her conclusion on acause of death by then.
