ELMA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A man who allegedly punished a child by forcing her to keep her hands in a bowl of bleach is now facing more charges.
State Police initially charged 45-year-old Gary Mathews of Elma with second degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Troopers say Mathews forced the 15-year-old girl to keep her hands in a bowl of bleach for around 10 minutes, causing third degree burns.
On Wednesday, Mathews was additionally charged with third degree assault and two more counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities investigating the incident say Mathews forced the child's hands into the bleach and when a family member tried to intervene, he punched the family member in the face. Police say Mathews also refused to allow the child to receive medical care for five days after the incident.
The 15-year-old was treated at Women and Children's Hospital before being transferred to the burn unit at ECMC, where she remains in stable condition.
Mathews is currently being held in the Erie County Holding Center without bail.
State Police and Erie County Child Protective Services continue to investigate this incident.
