BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It was a violent Mother's Day weekend in Buffalo. A mother of six was among five people wounded by a shooting rampage in MLK Park and lost an eye. And a 23-year-old woman was murdered on Minnesota Avenue.
It was supposed to be a weekend of celebrations. Students were graduating from college and Dwight Barlow's girlfriend, Samantha Cothran, turned 23.
"She was the perfect girl. She was so versatile. She could do anything from play basketball with you to change a tire," Barlow said.
The party was with friends and acquaintances they knew, nothing out the ordinary, until shots rang out.
Barlow said, "I ran out. I didn't care if people were shooting outside, she's out there."
Her friends don't think she was targeted. Samantha Cothran just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"She asked me before we came, she said, 'What boots should I wear?' She tried on a pair of orange boots and a pair of black boots and I said, 'Babe, wear the orange boots, wear the orange boots.' And it's the first thing I saw when I walked out," Barlow remembered.
She was an ambitious and determined woman. She worked as a pharmacy technician and had aspirations of becoming a pharmacist. Barlow says he knew she was the one.
"She used to ask me if we spent too much time together and now I realize it wasn't enough... It wasn't enough time," he wept.
Meanwhile, five victims ranging in age from 20 to 28-years-old are recovering from being shot at Martin Luther King Park. News 4 spoke to 27-year-old mother of six, Shaneta Payne, from her hospital bed at ECMC. Payne lost an eye in Saturday's shooting.
"It felt like something was exploding in my face. There was kids all outside, so for them to do that with kids all over the playground... I was right in front of the playground. We had to push kids out of the way," said Payne.
Another person was also shot the house party. Joshua Parker, 22, is recovering at the hospital.
Cothran's friends are holding a vigil Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. on Minnesota Avenue where she was killed.
