BRADFORD, Pa. (WIVB) - Police say a paramedic who was trusted to save lives helped himself to a supply of morphine and tried to cover up his tracks.
Brandon Landuyt is charged with reckless endangerment, falsifying records and several counts of felony theft. Bradford Police say the 31-year-old paramedic stole morphine from ambulances and refilled the bottles with saline to hide his crimes.
Landuyt worked for the Bradford Fire Department for the last 18 months. Earlier this month, fellow paramedics found bottles of pain killers had been tampered with. Police say the paper trail led to Landuyt, and he confessed when interviewed.
"His admission states he is addicted to narcotic painkillers," Bradford Police Chief Chris Lucco said. "The suspect admittedly tried to superglue those caps back on, but the glue didn't adhere."
According to court papers, he also admitted to saving leftover pain killers after treating patients and injecting the drugs into his own body.
Chief Lucco says at this point, authorities have no reason to believe anyone treated by Bradford paramedics received the wrong injection, but it is possible. Cross contamination isn't suspected but is also possible. And because of that they are testing Landuyt's blood for communicable diseases.
"They had an employee who went astray and that happens in all fields. It just happens he was a fireman and a paramedic," Chief Lucco said.
Landuyt has bonded out of jail and is currently in rehab. When he's released, Port Alleghany Police will question him about possible thefts there.
