PERRYSBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) - Troopers say they caught a metal thief red handed stealing copper from the abandoned JN Adams grounds on the southern tier.
A resident called police about a suspicious vehicle on Saturday around 8:15 a.m. and troopers responded to Airview Drive in Perrysburg to the former JN Adams grounds. State Police say the perimeter fence had been cut and propped open with a metal pipe. Troopers say they also found copper pipes near the fence and a backpack full of tools used for cutting copper wire.
Police say upon realizing he had been spotted hiding behind a cement wall, 33-year-old Russell Balles of Jamestown walked out and turned himself over to police. He has been charged with third degree burglary and possession of burglar tools.
Troopers say their investigation continues as they look for Balles accomplice.
