BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The job pays at least $13 an hour, but for some reason, theCensus Bureau can't entice western New York's unemployed populationto enlist.
It is a rare sight these days: an employer that is hiring. Butthe Census Office's offer to put hundreds of census takers on thestreet paying $11 to $13 an hour isn't getting many takers.
Census Office Manager Bob Coffey said, "I am a bit baffled bythis situation given the unemployment rate and the economy. Ithought we would have a better response."
Census Office Manager Bob Coffey told News 4 they are especiallylooking for bilingual applicants to work in the city where mailbackrates of the Census forms are lower.
"And I want to hire people who live in these areas to work inthe areas they live in," said Coffey.
Those forms, the shortest and simplest in history, are going tobe mailed out later this month. Coffey told News 4 they are evengoing door-to-door recruiting candidates for the job, whichrequires a test to qualify.
Coffey said, "Since November, when we started testing, we'veconsistently been having a 45 percent no-show rate. Even thoughwe're calling folks to remind them to come to the test."
Even though there is still snow on the ground, Coffey saysweather should not be a factor because most of the new workerswon't hit the streets until Spring.
"This work is going to happen starting May 1. That's when we'reactually going to put people on the streets. You're not going to bewalking around in this weather," said Coffey.
Coffey also told News 4 that they are looking for full-timeworkers, but most of the actual field work takes place on weekendsand evenings. If you are interested, the U.S. Census has atoll-free national hotline, 866-861-2010. You can also applyonline here .
