BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Erie County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of a former inmate at the Erie County Holding Center a homicide.
News 4 told you about 35-year-old Richard Metcalf, Jr. last December. Metcalf was arrested in Depew on burglary charges and transported to the Holding Center. The sheriff's office states Metcalf was harming himself when deputies intervened, preventing further injury. But Metcalf's family believes he was brutally beaten.
Now the medical examiner has determined that Metcalf's death is a homicide. Metcalf suffered an "acute and sub-acute myocardial infarction" - commonly known as a heart attack.
Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita's office is investigating, and the sheriff's office tells News 4 it welcomes that investigation.
