BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Two women who narrowly escaped their burning home are now searching for a beloved pet.
Kim Sieber lost her home, four cats and now she can't find her 7-year-old black lab, Joshua. Sieber's home on East Eagle Street in Buffalo started on fire Thursday around 3 a.m., and it was a total loss. Firefighters rescued four dogs from the home, but Joshua ran away before he could be treated for burns.
"I'm terrified," Sieber said. "He's like a child to me. I know he's scared, he's hurt and he's looking for me."
"He's my heart. I don't have kids. These are my kids. I'm lost. I don't know what to do without him."
Joshua ran away from first responders after being taken to the Green Acres Animal Hospital in Tonawanda. Rural Metro says when EMS personnel arrived at the animal hospital, two other rescued dogs cooperated in need of treatment, but Joshua ran into a field along Niagara Falls Boulevard.
Rural Metro personnel returned to the field and spotted Joshua. And though they tried to coax him with food, Joshua was scared and fled. He has not seen since.
Town of Tonawanda Animal Control Officer Rich Pifer said, "To catch an animal, it's very touch. [And] it's very rough terrain. It's all swamp land, but it's probably pretty much dried up now."
"If it gets hungry enough, that's the key thing, it will go to somebody."
Pifer and other animal control officers went out on ATVs Friday to look for Joshua, who has a gold tag and his license tag on his collar. But the information won't help anyone who finds him, because Sieber's home was destroyed by the fire, along with the phones inside.
Sieber is hoping someone will find Joshua and return him to her. If you see him, you can call police, the Erie County SPCA at 875-7360, or the Green Acres Animal Hospital at 694-0122.
