CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Officers spent Tuesday night in Cheektowaga Town Park, scouring for evidence in the hours after a man was shot and killed while children played nearby.
Basketball courts quickly became a crime scene, 19-year-old Ira Watkins was murdered with nearly 100 people nearby.
Watkins was shot in the chest around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, on the basketball courts right outside the Cheektowaga Recreational Center.
He was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital right across the street, where he later died.
Dozens of eyewitnesses were nearby when the shooting took place, and investigators are optimistic that they'll be able to catch the shooter.
Cheektowaga Police Department Chief David Zack said, "There are surveillance cameras all through the park. Portions of this incident were captured by those cameras. So we do have some things to work with. We definitely know that we've got well over 100 witnesses. In my estimation, from my first glance, this is a solvable case."
