WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Family and friends of Olympian Matt Anderson gathered in West Seneca to watch him compete in London Thursday afternoon.
It was standing room only at Flattery's. Even though the game wasn't live, as scheduled, there were still plenty of cheers for Anderson and Team USA.
Anderson, who didn't start playing volleyball until ten years ago, is known to family and friends as a powerful server. They say that's just what we saw from him on Thursday.
Team USA was working hard to beat rival Team Brazil, which is ranked number one in the world. On Sunday, Team USA beat Serbia. In that game, Anderson scored more points than any other player on his team.
Thursday's match was off to a shaky start with Brazil winning the first set. But there's still hope.
Matt's sister, Joelle Vanegas, said, "Play hard, stay focused and as long as the team continues to meld, they'll hopefully make it to the gold medal round."
The match was supposed to be broadcast live Thursday, but it seems a last minute decision made the network save the game for prime time.
