RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's supreme court has accepted the appeal of some defendants found guilty in the nation's biggest political corruption case.
In a 6-5 ruling, the top court said Wednesday the 12 defendants who received at least four votes in their favor when found guilty can have new trials for the specific counts where they won that support.
The ruling comes after widespread and massive protests in June that saw calls for an end to corruption and impunity in the justice system.
The scandal saw top aides of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva paying off legislators to support the ruling party's measures in congress. It came to light in 2005. Silva himself wasn't accused of wrongdoing.
A total of 25 people were originally found guilty in the case.
