LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian officials say as many as 14 people are dead after a chartered plane nosedived into the ground and burst into flames today, just yards from some tanks of aviation fuel.
They say six survivors were rushed to a hospital.
A police official says the pilot detected a problem soon after taking off from an airport in Lagos and tried to return to the airport for an emergency landing, but didn't make it.
Local news reports said the plane had been carrying mourners and the body of a former state governor who died last month.
