ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine president has urged the last rebels holding hostages in coastal communities in the south to surrender and prevent further bloodshed.
Moro National Liberation Front rebels stormed several communities on the outskirts of Zamboanga city on Sept. 9 and took residents hostage. Many rebels have since surrendered and released hostages, but the fighting between the rebels and the military has killed more than 100 people.
President Benigno Aquino III called on Thursday for the rebels to give up, saying: "It is not too late to end this, so we can put a stop to the deaths and injuries. That is in your hands."
Military spokesman Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said clashes Thursday killed an army commando and six rebels. Houses were also set on fire by the rebels.
