COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The United Nations rights chief has expressed concerns about Sri Lanka's future, saying the island nation is showing signs of heading in an increasingly authoritarian direction despite the end of a civil war four years ago.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Saturday that she was "deeply concerned that Sri Lanka despite the opportunity provided by the end of the war to construct a new vibrant all-embracing state is showing signs of heading in an increasingly authoritarian direction."
She was speaking at the end of a weeklong visit to assess the government's progress in investigating abuses committed during the war. She reports to the U.N. Human Rights Council next month.
She met government officials, politicians, rights activists and people affected by the war.
