BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Buffalo Women and Children's Hospital is getting a new name and a new home. Construction for the new John R. Oishei Children's Hospital is underway
The new hospital is being built on the Buffalo Niagara medical campus. A lot of work still needs to be done on the free-standing modern facility, but officials told News 4 it will be a big upgrade from the current hospital.
The new children's hospital is 50 percent completed. The $270 million project has over 400,000 square feet, 12 floors and over 180 beds. It will replace the Women and Children's hospital that is currently located in the Elmwood Village.
"We're moving the existing Women and Children's Hospital, we're right sizing it, we're making it bigger in areas that need to be bigger and we're making it smaller in areas where we don't need anymore," said Stephen Turkovich, Chief Medical Officer of Women and Children's Hospital.
Groundbreaking on the project was in 2014 and in just 14 months, the project is starting to take shape as it outlines patient rooms and surgical wings.
Thursday, physicians, board members and executives took a tour of the building to see the progress.
Officials said the new facility will not only enhance patient care, but will have state of the art technology that the current hospital doesn't have.
"This project will really allow us to bring the most cutting edge services to the kids and moms of Western New York and provide it in an efficient manner with really high quality," said Donna McKinney, Senior Director of Hospital Operations at Women and Children's Hospital.
The Oishei Children's Hospital will remain one of only 43 stand alone children's hospitals in the country and the only one in New York State.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
