New charge for Quebec man arrested in connection to Lancaster hit and run

LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB)- 32-year-old Sebastien Lavertu is facing a new charge after being arrested in connection to a fatal hit and run in Lancaster.

Lavertu is charged with Tampering with Evidence in addition to Leaving the Scene of an Accident that resulted in death.

"There was hair on the grill. And he removed that hair in the States," said Erie County District Attorney John Flynn.

Flynn said there's evidence Lavertu burned that hair while in Toronto, but he is only being charged with the removal of that hair from the grill of the truck..

"The actual cover up or lie is worse than the actual offense. We're going to find you. I mean, there's video everywhere," Flynn said.

And it played a big role in Lavertu's arrest, Flynn said.

Investigators claim the 32-year-old was behind the wheel of a tractor trailer that struck and killed 28-year-old Ryan Johns of Depew last week.

Lavertu was arrested upon returning to the U.S. from Canada at Lake Champlain.

Flynn said investigators also used debris found in the road to track Lavertu's vehicle.

"They found parts of the grill on the road and they were able to match up parts of grill with a certain kind of tractor trailer truck."

The accident occurred on Broadway near Pavement Road in Lancaster.

Investigators are also working to solve two other recent  hit and run cases in Erie County; one in Buffalo that killed 60-year-old Arthur Redrick, and another on Grand Island that's left 53-year-old Dana Papaj in a coma.
