CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) - If you're in the market for a new house, you could soon get a great bargain on a three-bedroom modular home that was built completely by students in the Erie 1 BOCES program.
Students studying Building Trades and Electrical Systems have built the house from the ground up over the course of the past school year in the back parking lot of the Harkness Career and Technical Center on Aero Drive.
On Friday, June 10, at 9:30 a.m., the house will be auctioned off.
All of the money from the sale will go right back into the program to allow more students to have the opportunity to build another house next year.
Students who built the house that's getting auctioned off next week say their experience was extremely valuable in setting them up for future success in their careers.
"I worked on my fair share of this house, and I've loved every minute of it," said Building Trades Senior Seth Russo, who will be studying green building trades at ECC in the fall. "It's really cool to get your hands on, and to see something that you've built come together as one piece, and to know that a family is going to be living in it eventually, it will be really cool."
The finished product is about a 1,250 square foot three bedroom, one bathroom ranch-style modular home, featuring custom counters, built in work spaces, an electric fireplace, and a security system, which was donated by Casco Security Systems.
"I think we have a great product to sell here, the home is beautiful," said Cash Cunningham, an auctioneer with Cash Realty & Auctions, who has auctioned off the Erie 1 BOCES house nearly every year since the students started building them 15 years ago.
"This is probably the best," Cash said. "There are so many things that are different, and I think better. It's a much nicer home this year than what we've seen in previous years."
There will be no minimum bid for this auction. The house will go to the highest bidder who can arrange to have it hauled to their own lot.
The hope is for the house to sell for at least as much as the materials cost to build the house, around $40,000.
