Two passengers safely escape boat fire on Niagara River

CITY OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Police and fire crews responded to a boat fire on the Niagara River Wednesday night around 6:30 p.m.

The 36-foot Carver cruiser was fully engulfed in flames near the shore at Niawanda Park. Police say two people were on the boat when the fire started and both safely got off of it. After jumping into the river, they were rescued by another boater.

Both were taken to the City of Tonawanda shore. They were not injured.

Damage is estimated at $10,000, and the boat was a total loss. An exact cause for the fire has not been determined yet, but the Grand Island Fire Company suspects it may have had to do with an engine or fuel system malfunction.
