BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Another Buffalo Wing Fest is in the books. There is no word yet on how many people turned out this year at the festival.
There was something new at the fest this year. For the first time in 12 years, there was a meatless option. Vegetarians were able to snack on hummus dip and breaded green beans flavored to taste like wings.
The highlight of the Wing Fest for many is the wing eating contest. This year, there was a stunning upset as newcomer Miki Sudo ate 178 wings in 12 minutes. Michele Lesko came in second and five-time champ Sonya Thomas came in third.
It’s the first time in history that three women have swept a competitive eating event.
Some were expecting to see last year’s winner Joey Chestnut, but turns out he was sick. He sent out a tweet saying “ @JoeyJaws: A sore throat and fever kept me from competing today. Sorry for not communicating my illness earlier. Congrats to the winners.”
