WHEATLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) - Two people are dead and three others injured after a tractor-trailer broadsided an SUV at an intersection in the Town of Wheatland.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the driver of the Jeep, 21-year-old Taylor Binnert and front seat passenger 20-year-old Christopher Peterson were both pronounced dead at the scene. The three female passengers, 17-year-old Emily Peterson, 17-year-old Michela Murphy, and 20-year-old Joanne Kruchten, were all thrown from the Jeep and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.
All five victims were from Caledonia in Livingston County and were on their way home from volunteering at a camp in Batavia for children with special needs.
The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Wheatland, which is 15 miles southwest of Rochester, at the intersection of North and Riga Mumford Roads.
Capt. Michael Fowler tells the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle that Binnert may have mistakenly believed his vehicle was at a four-way stop and pulled into the path of the truck, which was traveling on a road that didn't have a stop sign. Deputies say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
One of the injured is listed in guarded condition, the two others in satisfactory condition.
The truck driver wasn't hurt.
