TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - An 18-year-old male was killed around 1 a.m. Thursday when he was hit by a tractor trailer while running across the I-290, between the Colvin Avenue and Delaware Avenue exits.
The teen apparently ran from the eastbound lanes across the westbound lanes of traffic. The tractor trailer struck the teen while he was in the far right lane. The tractor trailer driver told police the teen appeared on the roadway without warning.
Around 6:15 a.m. Thursday crews removed the tractor trailer from the scene.
The roadway reopened around 6:45 a.m. Thursday. Overnight, all lanes of traffic on I-290 West, between the Colvin Avenue and Delaware Avenue exits, were closed for more than five hours.
Town of Tonawanda Police Lieutenant Nick Bado said, "We had commercial vehicle investigators up there that go over log sheets for drivers, interview the driver, make sure there is no issues with them driving too long, intoxication, any contributing factors like that, there was nothing like that."
The driver of the tractor trailer is not facing charges.
