TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A 12-year-old boy who was pinned beneath an SUV has lost his life.
Good Samaritans rushed over after Thursday's accident and desperately tried to save him. Bystanders used every ounce of strength they had to lift the SUV off the boy, but he did not survive his injuries.
According to the Town of Tonawanda Police the accident happened at the corner of Delaware Road and Sheridan Driver during 5 p.m. rush hour traffic. Police say the driver of a Pontiac SUV had the green arrow and was turning left onto Sheridan, but at the same time the 12-year-old boy on his bike was riding along Delaware Road.
Police say the boy was not wearing a helmet, but they also don’t know if it would have made a difference since he was pinned beneath the car.
One person called into WBEN radio and explained the tremendous efforts by the many people that tried saving the young boy.
“I didn't see the contact or anything, but as I pulled up to the light, I could see the people, about 15 of them running to the car.” The witness said, “By the time I got there, they had already got the car up. There must have been 20 people and they lifted it up and pulled the young man out.”
Police say no charges have been filed against the driver at this time. Detectives are working closely with the district attorney’s office.
The boy's name has not been released. An autopsy will be conducted as part of the police investigation.
