BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A potential disaster was averted Thursday night at a crowded concert in Buffalo when patrons say the floor suddenly started to buckle.
About 400 people were jumping up and down on the first floor of The Waiting Room on Delaware Avenue, listening to the popular ska punk band Streetlight Manifesto. All of a sudden, something went wrong. One woman who was at the concert said it looked like the floor was sinking in a little.
The concert promoter says when they noticed something wrong with the floor, they went down into the basement and saw the problem. A steel beam had buckled, so they postponed the show and got everyone safely out in a matter of minutes.
Kristy Koebel, who was at the show, says it was a scary situation to be in.
"I grabbed my sister, and the guy in front of me told us to stay closer to the walls. You couldn't see what was going on, we were just listening to what was being told to us," she said. "You always hear about these terrible incidents where a floor will cave in at a concert and I couldn't believe it could have potentially happened to us in Buffalo."
City officials say about 10 floor beams broke, causing part of the floor to collapse. Once a plan is completed, it will be sent to the city inspector's office for approval. Once approved, repairs can begin.
All of the weekend concerts at The Waiting Room have been canceled; refunds are available. The venue hopes to re-open for a concert by next Tuesday.
The Waiting Room released this statement statement:
"Unfortunately last night we had to postpone our show with Streetlight Manifesto due to a beam buckling in the floor. Our patron's safety is our #1 priority and we would never want to jeopardize that. We thought it was in the best interest of everyone to postpone the show until we could properly inspect the situation. That being said, we have rescheduled the show with Streetlight Manifesto for Tuesday Nov 12th at the Town Ballroom, 681 Main Street Downtown Buffalo. All tickets previously purchased for the show last night will be honored at the door. If you lost your ticket stub please notify your place of purchase to have your new tickets issued. Refunds are also available thru the end of October at your points of purchase. A limited amount of new tickets will be available for sale today at 5pm online at tickets.com, the Town Ballroom box office and the After Dark offices. In the interim the shows scheduled at Waiting Room for this weekend only, Lions Lions and Savoy have been canceled. Refunds are available at their points of purchase.
