BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo man is facing several charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle with a 3-year-old child in the back seat. It all happened in a matter of minutes at a gas station parking lot.
Surveillance video shows the alleged thief, 24-year-old Carl Thomas, lurking near the gas pumps at the gas station at William Street and Fillmore Avenue around 12:30 a.m. on Friday. When the child's mother went inside the store, police say Thomas made his move and took off in the car, apparently unaware of the child inside.
Syed Rahman is the manager of the gas station and said, "How can you do that when a kid is inside? Just come out and talk for 10 minutes leaving the kid along out there? I don't understand."
The car thief drives aware from the gas station, as if nothing was amiss. Police found the vehicle not far from the scene around 2 a.m. on Detroit Street.
Buffalo Police spokesman Mike DeGeorge said, "Police quickly got very good information through surveillance video. Thankfully the young child, 3-years-old, was in the back seat unharmed."
A short time later, Thomas was arrested on Fillmore Avenue. He is charged with reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle, grand larceny and second-degree kidnapping.
The child's mother, 28-year-old Shawntey Harper, is being charged with reckless endangerment.
At least four fire companies responded to a large house fire in Blasdell.
Buffalo Police have arrested 26-year-old Nicholas Finnegan of South Buffalo and charged him with pushing Russ Ross to his death.
