BETHANY, N.Y. (WIVB) - The State Department of Transportation is abandoning a plan to put a roundabout at a dangerous and deadly intersection in Genesee County.
In an ironic twist, the man who has campaigned for changes for years for the intersection of Route 20 and East Road in Bethany was set to lose his home at the corner when the DOT determined a roundabout would be the best solution. But that plan changed Wednesday after agency officials met with community leaders to discuss their plans.
As a result, Thomas and Debbie Douglas will get to stay in their historic farmhouse.
"We want to thank everybody who stood up for us, their help and their comments. We want to thank Senator Ranzenhofer, Assemblyman Holley, the Genesee County Legislature and everybody who got behind us - you know, the state really listened, that was truly it - they believe the roundabout is still the best option but they respected everybody's wishes around here," the couple stated.
Instead of a roundabout drivers will see additional warnings about the stop signs on East Road.
