HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) - A man had to be pulled from Lake Erie, following an automobile accident in Hamburg Saturday afternoon.
Hamburg Police responded to the crash on Old Lake Shore Road, near Crescent Terrace, where they found a minivan off the road. The driver had fled the scene after his vehicle left the road and went over a guard rail. He then jumped into Lake Erie.
The Erie County Sheriff's Air One helicopter was called in to help find the man, police said. He was found in the water about a mile away from the crash scene.
Police said the man is in custody and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. He was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, felony DWI, aggravated unlicensed driving operation 1st, resisting arrest, obstruction, disorderly conduct, public lewdness and failure to keep right.
