LEWISTON, N.Y. (WIVB) - Heavy smoke from a Lewiston fire left crews unable to rescue an elderly man still inside the burning house Sunday morning.
Around 2:30 a.m., crews responded to the report of a fire at Lower River Road. Several attempts were made by Lewiston Police and Niagara County Sheriff's to try and enter the burning home, but heavy smoke made their efforts unsuccessful.
The fire was extinguished when Lewiston #1 Fire Department arrived to the scene along with other fire companies, and 85-year-old James McIntyre was found dead inside.
The home appears to be a total loss and an investigation into the cause is underway.
At least four fire companies responded to a large house fire in Blasdell.
