BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Good Samaritan is being applauded after hearing a woman in the water in the Black Rock Canal screaming and calling for help.
The woman was found near a barge by the Buffalo Sewer Authority after the Good Samaritan called in rescuers around 10:15 Wednesday morning.
Buffalo Fire Lt. Jeff Rapp said, "He acted quickly and found a life ring with a rope on it and got that to her so that she could hang on to that so she could hang onto that, at least temporarily."
Fire crews arrived on scene shortly thereafter.
"We put one ladder in, I'd climbed down part of the bank to at least start talking to her so that she knew we were ready to assist her," Lt. Rapp said.
He says that's when the crew from Engine 19 and Ladder 4 put down another ladder and secured the woman. They then made their way to safety.
"She was able to with a little bit of assistance climb up the ladder by herself," Lt. Rapp said. "Us just making sure she stayed stable."
The woman was pulled from the water and was conscious, but was shaken up.
Lt. Rapp said, "She was still uncertain of what was going to happen at that point. But I think for the most part she knew she was safe."
Police say it appears this was a suicide attempt, but authorities are glad firefighters were able to save her - all thanks to a Good Samaritan.
Buffalo Fire Battalion Chief Peter Kertzie said, "There's not a lot of people around. She's very lucky that someone heard her."
The woman was taken to ECMC to be checked out.
