BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - HARBORcenter and Canisius College revealed their plans Tuesday morning, that will be a big boost for downtown Buffalo. Canisius College's D1 men's ice hockey program will now call HARBORcenter home, and be the primary tenant of HARBORcenter.
The Golden Griffins will have their own locker room, dedicated practice time on the ice and the home ice advantage. Their logo will also be printed on the ice.
Canisius College President John Hurley said, "This is a great day for Canisius, hockey and downtown Buffalo."
Koelmel won't say how much Canisius is paying to be at Harbor Center but he says they've signed a multi-year contract with HARBORcenter.
It was almost two weeks ago now that the last big announcement about HARBORcenter came. Word that a full-service Marriott hotel will be moving in as early as the Spring of 2015. It's part of the $170 million multi-use complex is being financed by Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula.
HARBORcenter President John Koelmel said, "We're determined to do what hasn't been done before, and to do it with some of the best in the business was critical to the success of the project."
The HARBORcenter is being built in the Webster block right near the First Niagara Center. Construction includes two ice rinks, built on top of an indoor parking ramp, and a restaurant, to open a year from September even before the hotel is completed.
