HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) - Along with educating others on good health Sunday at the Western New York Health Show, the event also ended up saving the life of one local woman.
Candace Carberry and Kathleen Maxian are ovarian cancer survivors and passionate about educating women about the disease.
They started the Western New York Ovarian Cancer Project and had a booth at today's Health Show in Hamburg.
"We educate them in the symptoms of ovarian cancer; that's all we have for early detection," said Carberry.
Carberry is a former teacher, who said it's a deadly disease that can be hard to detect early. Teaching people the symptoms is important, and that good education might just be what saved Sue Philip's life.
At the 2012 Health Show, Sue wasn't feeling quite right and she decided to share some of her symptoms with Candace.
Cancer survivor Sue Philips said, "She was just really confident talking to me, and telling me yeah, you really need to follow up."
Philip's went to the doctor after attending the show and learned she had Endrometrial Cancer that begins in the lining of the uterus.
Luckily, they caught the disease early on in stage one and were able to surgically remove it.
While she had cancer Philips said, "I had no fear whatsoever. I just felt like I was in really good hands."
It has been quite the year for the fearless survivor and she did not have a chance to thank Carberry until this year's show.
Philip's told her she is now cancer free, "To know she was able to beat cancer is truly amazing. That's our goal," said Carberry.
It was certainly a goal well accomplished.
