ATTICA, N.Y. (WIVB) - The woman at the center of an SPCA scandal is dead and mystery surrounds her sudden passing.
Village of Attica Police say they haven't ruled out suicide as they continue to investigate Susan Davila's death. She's the former Wyoming County SPCA director who was accused of hoarding more than 500 cats and was facing multiple animal cruelty charges.
Cats crawled out of the walls at the Attica shelter when state police raided it back in February. The woman taking all the heat was Susan Davila, the former Wyoming County SPCA director.
Months after the investigation started, sources have confirmed to us that Davila has died. Village of Attica Police are investigating the circumstances of her death.
Former SPCA volunteer Chris Wiehe helped expose the conditions at the shelter, but she says she never wanted anything like this to happen.
Wiehe said, "I just wanted the cats to get some help."
Wiehe says Davila was a good person, just in over her head. Wiehe said, "She always loved the cats, she had a good heart, its just that she got overburdened."
Davila was facing 20 counts of animal cruelty, but Wiehe says she wasn't the only one to blame.
Village Police say they don't suspect foul play and they are waiting for the toxicology results to come back which usually take three to four weeks. A family member called for help Saturday afternoon and Davila died at Warsaw Hospital a few hours later.
