BUFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Local politicians, business leaders and veterans joined forces Tuesday, in an attempt to keep the Golden Age Games in Buffalo this year. The 27th Annual Games were abruptly cancelled by the Department of Veterans Affairs, but no one seems to be able to explain why.
Tuesday, Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Brian Higgins assured veterans and local business leaders they are doing everything in their power to get the games back on track for this coming May.
The Golden Age Games are a qualifier for the Senior Olympics, and is specifically geared toward veterans. After more than six years of planning the games, local committee members were told a week ago today they games were postponed indefinitely.
Schumer assured the local crowd the games have not been cancelled, but since most of the work has already been done locally, Schumer questions why the games can't go along as planned. Especially since more than 1,000 veterans are signed up to compete and would mean nearly $2.2 million for the local economy.
"This decision is a punch in the gut to western New York Veterans and to all western New Yorkers." Schumer said, "We will not stop our protests and our actions until this wrong is righted."
The Secretary for the Department of Veterans Affairs has told Senator Schumer, a final decision on the games will come down by the end of the week.
