DEPEW, NY (WIVB) - While the United States Postal Service is considering moving a lot of work out of Buffalo, the National Association of Letter Carriers held its "Old Timers Night" for recent retirees, at Hearthstone Manor in Depew.
Association President Fred Rolando was a special guest. He says Congress can cure the postal service's money problems with legislation.
Congress won't give the postal service access to their own money. They've had to take $20 billion out of their operating fund in the last 4 years, and put it into a future retiree benefit health fund that already has $20 billion in it, more than any other federal agency, and they're required to put $5.5 billion a year into this fund. And so if Congress would give them access to their operating money, they would be fine," Rolando explained.
A rally protesting a postal service proposal to close some WNY area offices is planned for Tuesday in Buffalo.
