TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Trooper Dobson leaves behind three children, his partner and her son.
Saturday night, we're hearing more about his life and his passion to serve and protect.
Capt. Steven Nigrelli said, "Kevin was that guy that had that twinkle in the eye. He always had a smile on his face."
And those who knew him best, say that smile was infectious. 43-year-old Kevin Dobson was just "Dobber" to those around him, and gave out nicknames of his own.
"Kevin gave you a nickname just by putting an "O" at the end of your name. So it was Stevo! But he did it in a voice. It's was "Steve-OOOO" That's what I remember about Dobber," added Capt. Nigrelli.
Dobson, though, is also remembered for his dedication to the job. He put his life on the line everyday of the last 14 years to protect his fellow neighbors.
Major Christopher Cummings said, "He was on the interstate patrol, which says a lot about Kevin. It takes a lot to get on the interstate patrol. He was a very, very good trooper. Took care of business. A very active trooper."
Dobson grew up in Buffalo and is the son of a retired Erie County Sheriff's Deputy. His sudden and untimely death in the line of duty breaks the hearts of many who loved him.
"Kevin is survived by three children- his 16-year-old son Kevin, his 15-year-old daughter Jamie, and another daughter Brooke, age 4. He lives with his partner Bridgett Hastings and her son, Andrew," added Major Cummings.
Now as his family off and on the job struggle to cope with this devastating loss, they'll try to find solace in the fond memories they share.
Capt. Nigrelli said, "Dobber made us laugh. He brightened our day. It's amazing and ironic that someone who brought so much cheer into our lives, has made us cry so hard today. Kevin, Dobber, 196- We love you and we'll miss you."
