BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Daniel Nye, 26, of Cheektowaga was found Saturday at about 5p.m, unresponsive in his cell, the Sheriff calls it an apparentsuicide by hanging.
Deputies performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at BuffaloGeneral Hospital. Nye had been pulled over Thursday night inCheektowaga with a broken tail pipe.
"They pulled him over just to check out his equipment," saidCaptain James Speyer, of the Cheektowaga Police.
According to Speyer, when they ran him for his driver licensestatus, an outstanding warrant for forgery was found.
Cheektowaga Police also say they found a pill used to treatheroin addiction and charged him with possession of a controlledsubstance. He spent Thursday night in the Cheektowaga Policelockup.
"There were no suicidal tendencies that our officers noticed. Hewas here for, approximately 10:30 at night on Thursday, until about11:40 Friday morning."
An autopsy will be performed Friday to determine the cause ofdeath, and if it in fact is suicide, it would be the fifth byhanging since 2007, and the 8th since 2003. It comes less than twomonths after the last hanging. The Justice Department has a pendinglawsuit alleging the county jails have deficient suicide preventionmeasures.
"It's incredible, but I'm not surprised. When I first got theword yesterday I was absolutely stunned that this has happenedagain, that's it's been allowed to happen again," said founder ofPrisoners are People Too, Karima Amin.
