WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A strange humming or buzzing noise has been keeping some neighbors up at night.
"It's tough to sleep at night. It really is," said Jeff Bauer of West Seneca.
Ever since the noise started, News 4 received numerous calls and e-mails about it from people in Snyder, West Seneca and South Buffalo. Some neighbors describe the noise as really loud and obnoxious.
"Sometimes people turn their TV up louder to avoid the noise. That's how loud it gets sometimes," Bauer said.
Susan Welch in West Seneca says the noise begins around 9 p.m. at night and continues on until morning.
Officials with the Thruway Authority said the noise is likely coming from construction crews that are working on Interstate 90 between the 190 and the 400 overnight. They’re repairing the concrete.
Buffalo's Division Director for the Thruway Authority Tom Pericak said crews are using a diamond grinder to smooth out any imperfections. Pericak said the construction is part of a $7 million highway rehabilitation project.
The goal is to repair the roads so they're safer for drivers. Some neighbors said learning why the construction is taking place makes the noise a little more bearable.
"It's worth it," said Bauer. "I mean you have the hump in the thruway and their trying to grind it down to make it flat. I guess it will be all right."
Welch added, "I enjoy the fact that they want to improve on the highways because we need that. We don't want any accidents. However I would prefer if they could change their scheduling."
Pericak said they chose to do the project at night to prevent traffic jams from occurring during the day. He said the project should be done next Wednesday, weather permitting.
"Thank God because I can't stand it," said Katelyn Vitez of West Seneca.
