BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A new contractor has been tapped to resume Canalside construction of the Aud block in downtown Buffalo.
Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation officials tell News 4 that the bonding agent for the $20 million project has selected a new contractor, and that workers could be on-site by next week.
Canal Harbor Chairman Robert Gioia said, "Our attempt here is, and we are very comfortable that we will have this project done by the summer of next year."
Canal Harbor President Thomas Dee says the bond agent will assume the original contract.
"The original contract was $19 million and some dollars. So we're holding to that plus whatever change orders happen along the way. But in terms of added costs from a construction standpoint, we don't anticipate that," Dee added.
The project, which involves canals, bridges and a towpath, has been stalled for months after the original contractor, DiPizio Construction, was terminated by the Canal Harbor agency. It was scheduled to be finished last November.
In a letter to the company, Dee stated DiPizio failed to demonstrate any significant improvement in its performance. DiPizio responded saying the termination is unjustified, stating "you have been misinformed."
A legal battle between the agency and DiPizio Construction is still ongoing. DiPizio claims their company was not at fault for the delays. The project was originally scheduled to take 10 months to finish.
Dee said, "We're moving forward with this project now, that's what's important. And so the project is moving forward. The timing of it is going to be fine."
