HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) - We have learned new information about a motorcycle crash that killed off-duty Evans Police officer Frederick Garrasi III.
News 4 used a Freedom of Information request to answer the lingering questions about the high-profile crash that took the life of a 24-year-old police officer.
The reports and diagrams reveal how police say the accident happened: the Ford Taurus stopped at the red light on Rogers Road, then turned right on red, onto Route 5. Garrasi was already heading east in the left lane. And when the Taurus changed lanes, he clipped the rear driver's side and flew off his bike.
According to the police report, a black Mercedes heading west then hit the motorcycle and Garrasi.
The place on the police report that would list the speed of the motorcycle has been marked "unknown." So it remains unknown if the reason the driver of the Ford didn't see Garrasi is because he came up on her very quickly.
In her statement to police, the driver of the Ford, 65-year-old Lorraine Pelc, says she looked both ways at the red light and thought the road was clear. Then she said, 45 seconds later:
"...I heard what sounded like an accident, but I didn't think it was me, because I didn't feel anything hit my car," Pelc wrote on the police report.
The driver and passenger in the Mercedes told police the Ford pushed the motorcycle right into their lane and they were unable to stop. They knew they hit the bike but were unsure whether they hit Garrasi.
The attorney of Pelc says she was cited with two traffic violations: failure to yield and unsafe lane change.
The reports do not indicate any of the drivers were impaired. Hamburg Police did not return phone calls asking for clarification on the police reports.
