NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB) - Looking up at the dark sky Friday night, many could tell there was going to be a storm that would leave its mark on WNY.
And that it did.
The heart of Niagara County around Pendleton, Cambria and Lockport was hit extremely hard with rain, thunder and lightning and high winds.
Robert Perry lost his barn in the storm. "When that storm come up, the wind come up, I looked outside and heard a big 'BOOM.' Come outside, and the barn was gone," he said. "I've got five antique tractors there that I've lost all five of."
Severed poles and power lines created treacherous conditions, forcing some people to leave their homes.
Chief Shawn Christman from the Wendelville Volunteer Fire Co. said, "We evacuated some people out of their homes. Our biggest issue last night, one of the high-tension lines also blew a hole in the gas main which then was leaking into the sewer system, which actually was ignited by the high-tension lines."
Jeff Pyskaty and his wife of Pendleton both got a surprise when they went down in their basement. "The wife went and unlocked the basement door because we were thinking of heading down. I hadn't seen it that bad. We've been here since '95; this was my grandfather's farm and my dad's after that."
Firefighters and residents spent a long night bailing out basements, where sump pumps had failed.
"We got back in the firehouse about 5:00 a.m., and then the tone-out went again at about 9:00 for us to keep pumping basements. So we got a couple hours' break, and we're back at it," Christman said.
Crews continue to restore power and clean up downed trees and power lines from the roadways.
The abandoned puppy in the Town of Evans was actually turned in by the dog's owner.
