BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Twenty new recruits got to see if they can "take the heat" on Tuesday as they work their way through volunteer firefighter boot camp.
The recruits come from 17 different departments across Erie County and are taking part in a 90-hour intensive training program. On Tuesday, they ad their first experience working with live fire.
Erin Hutchinson said, "It was fun, interesting, exhilarating, it was definitely interesting. It was a first time experience."
After this training, recruits are expected to join in a formal graduation ceremony Friday evening.
Erie County Deputy Fire Coordinator Tiger Schmittendorf said, "We have a million dollar training facility behind us where they're going to learn to stretch those hoses and do forcible entry and get those hose crews inside and do searches as they're going through the building, as well as find the seat of the fire and attack the seat of the fire and do proper ventilation."
Schmittendorf says Erie County is on pace to attract 700 new volunteer fire recruits this year, which is around a hundred more than last year. But he adds the area can always use more.
